MOTEL 7
Motelseven is a multidisciplinary artist who started out painting graffiti in the early 2000s. She has had solo shows in London, Oslo, Amsterdam, Los angeles, Cape Town and now Johannesburg.
Having travelled the world to paint and working as a pastry chef in London for over 10 years, she has settled back down in Cape Town where she hopes to continue painting in the streets and work with communities to pass on her love and knowledge of art and to show how transformative and powerful the medium can be.
Playground
Cape Town-based artist Motel Seven presents Playground, her first solo exhibition in Johannesburg. Beginning her journey in the early 2000s through graffiti, Motel has since exhibited internationally, developing a style that challenges the boundaries between street and gallery.
Playground is an exploration of contrasts—good and bad, perception and reality, innocence and unease. Through a mix of mediums including canvas, papier-mâché, spray paint, and sculpture, Motel creates a world that is both playful and melancholic, inviting viewers to confront complexity beneath the surface.
This exhibition is a showcase of our relationship with our childhoods and how we hold onto certain feelings and imagery throughout our lives – specifically in the world of an artist whose goal is to always be moving forward while maintaining the roots of the very early years of life.
Step inside. See differently.
