Cape Town-based multidisciplinary artist Motel 7 brings her internationally recognized vision to Johannesburg with Playground—her first solo exhibition in the city.
Having begun her creative path through graffiti in the early 2000s, Motel has since exhibited in London, Oslo, Amsterdam, Los Angeles, and Cape Town. Her work fuses street and gallery, blending the raw energy of public spaces with the intimacy of studio practice.
Playground invites viewers into a world of layered contradictions: joy and discomfort, memory and distortion, whimsy and weight. Using canvas, papier-mâché, spray paint, and sculptural elements, Motel 7 explores how childhood echoes shape us and how artists carry those echoes forward.
The result is a vibrant, emotive exhibition that challenges perception and evokes nostalgia—with an edge.
